I am so impressed with some of the drawing that has been happening in our Arts program with Mr Cornall. Students have been learning about using shadowing and perspective when drawing. I recently dropped in to see a lesson with our Year 6 students and heard some great feedback on how their learning is progressing.

Oak, Rumi and Ziggy demonstrated for me how they had been using shadowing and perspective in their drawings.

Bowie and Ayla told me that their drawing skills have improved a lot throughout the drawing unit and that they noticed a big improvement even after just one workshop with Mr Cornall.

On Friday 8 May we celebrated Mother’s Day with mums and special people invited to come into school to participate in some activities. In the morning we had our Mother’s Day stall where students had the chance to select gifts for their mums and special people in their lives. I hope that all mums, grandmothers, step mums and people who take on important carer roles in the lives of our students enjoyed celebrating on the Sunday and felt appreciated. When I dropped into the Mother’s Day stall and saw students selecting gifts there was a lot of thought that went into choosing the perfect gifts.

We had some wonderful mums and helpers who assisted with running our Mother’s Day Stall. We also had some families provide generous donations for our stall.

Thank you to:

On Monday 18 May we recognised Education Support Staff Day. Our Education Support Staff go above and beyond to support our students and school operations everyday. They play such an important role here at Balnarring Primary School. Our Education Support staff celebrated with a morning tea at recess time and we hope they felt appreciated by our school community.

Our Year 5 students braved the cold weather and headed off to Ballarat for Sovereign Hill Camp on Monday 11 May. The camp program included gold panning, an immersive education session on Eureka Stockade, exploring the mines and the AURA sound and light spectacular. Well done to our students, staff and parent helper for a fantastic Year 5 Camp experience.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is running from Wednesday 27 May until Wednesday 3 June. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving Reconciliation in Australia. In First Nations Studies lessons, Hillary has been working with our Year Foundation – Year 2 students on understanding what Reconciliation is and why it is important. All of our classrooms will be participating in activities relating to Reconciliation Week until 3 June.

Congratulations to all of our students who represented our school at the District Cross Country held at Hastings Foreshore on Thursday 21 May. I was lucky enough to attend this event and see our students in action. When I was there, I spoke with some of our students about how they were feeling about participating in Cross County and what plan/strategy they had for their race.

Sage, Minnie, Kiki and Hunter from Year 4 told me that they were planning to jog at the beginning of the race and would then run and jog throughout the race to make sure they could complete the full distance of the event.

Eddy from Year 5 shared with me that his goal at Cross Country this year was to finish in the top 20 after finishing in 30th place last year. Eddy placed 12th this year which not only means he met his goal, it also shows significant improvement from his placing last year. Well done Eddy on being so determined and focused on your goal.

We have 13 students who will progress to compete in the Division Cross Country event that will be held at Hastings Foreshore on Wednesday 3 June.

Our Junior School Council (JSC) students have been busy working with Michaela and volunteers from the Hastings Men’s Shed and have been working on painting our play café. Thank you to all of our JSC students for your work on our café and for working together this year to make a difference to our school.

Our JSC student are:

Millie, Sandy, Noah, Marlo, Billy, Maya, Xavier, Ava, Kiera, Colton, Fletcher, Elka, Ally, Miller, Evie, Zali, Patrick, Nate and Maisie.
